Upcoming Events: Urban Garden Market, Library Hearing, Ellen Bravo Lecture

1. This week at the URBAN GARDEN MARKET:

In
addition to the fresh produce, home-made baked goods, barbecue, etc.
two special events are scheduled for the this week's Market.  Michele Boone from LaPaz will provide musical entertainment.  Ms Boone writes folk music and will perform her own vocal and guitar compositions.  She will be performing from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
Also on Saturday, Phil Sutton, the St. Joe County Extension Agent, will be at the market with handouts and ready to answer questions on "How to put your garden to bed".  This is a great opportunity, especially for new gardeners, to learn how to prepare for a great harvest next summer.

The
Urban Garden Market is located at 1025 N. Bendix Drive (just south of
LWW and Bendix) and is open on Saturday mornings from 9 AM to 1 PM.

2. A PUBLIC HEARING on the St. Joseph County PUBLIC LIBRARY BUDGET is scheduled for Monday, September 27, at 4:15 PM.

The
hearing is scheduled to take place in the Presentation Room on the 3rd
Floor of the Main Library, 304 South Main St., South Bend.  In an
October 23 article of the South Bend Tribune, Staff Writer Margaret
Fosmoe, reported that library Director Don Napoli said the proposed
budget for 2011 is "the budget needed to restore many of the services
that have been cut in recent years, including Saturday service hours at
all library branches."  For that to happen, however, Mr. Napoli
proposes the closure of the LaSalle Branch.  That is the only solution
for the budget shortfall that has thus far been offered by the library
Director, although members of the public have repeatedly requested
alternative proposals for the Board to consider.

On
September 27, the Board will vote on the budget. A separate decision
will be made about the future of the LaSalle Branch Library — on
October 25.  A public hearing is not scheduled for that date.  At Board
meetings the "Hearing of Visitors" occurs after the Board has completed
their business. For this reason, community members who have been
working to Save the LaSalle Branch Library will testify at the budget
hearing next Monday, September 27.  Please join us.
