The ST. JOSEPH COUNTY KROC CENTER will be the focus of a May 18 public meeting sponsored by the Community Forum for Economic Development.
Ground soon will be broken for the construction of the St. Joseph County Kroc Center, to be located at the existing Alonzo Watson Park at Western Avenue and Chapin St.
The Center is one of 30 planned for cities throughout the U.S., resulting from a $1.6 billion gift to the Salvation Army by Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc.
Planned for the Center are recreational facilities (playing fields, an aquatic center, fitness center, gymnasium, etc.) educational programs (computer training, tutoring, nutritional education, parenting classes, etc.) and comprehensive fine arts and digital arts studios. A 250 seat chapel/theater is also included in the plans.
In addition to the $47.5 million investment by the Salvation Army, contributions from both private and public sources will result in a total investment of over $60 million. Two million dollars has been committed from the State of Indiana, one million dollars from the City of South Bend, and one million dollars from AM General, given on behalf of their employees.
You are invited to learn more about the Center by joining us at our next public forum. Here is a flyer about the forum:
