This month’s business meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 15, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Office of the Minority Health Coalition in LaSalle Square.
The agenda for this meeting will feature an in-depth discussion of the current use of TIFs (Tax Increment Financing) by local governments. On June 25th, a major change was made to the AEDA (Airport Economic Development Area, known as the Airport TIF) when the entire Portage Prairie area was added to the TIF. This event has resulted in an increase in questions and concerns about the use of TIFs.
At the June 25 public hearing before the South Bend Redevelopment Commission, testimony was presented on this issue by Marty Wolfson, representing the CFED Coordinating Committee. This testimony is posted below. At our meeting next Tuesday, we’ll have an opportunity to continue discussion of this important issue.
Other agenda items for the meeting include:
– a discussion of the July 12 Public Meeting on the Future of LaSalle Square,
– a proposal for a new group within CFED, "Appropriate Technology – Digital Inclusion," which seeks to incorporate information technologies into the community in order to promote education and improve the quality of life,"
– a report on plans for a Michiana Human Rights Initiative to coincide with the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
