INDIANA ASSOCIATION OF UNITED WAYS: 2016 A.L.I.C.E. REPORT
The program for our October meeting will discuss new data from both federal and state sources about poverty and income, followed by a discussion of current economic challenges faced by residents of St. Joseph County.
Economist Marty Wolfson will analyze the U.S. Census Bureau reports and their implications for financially struggling Hoosiers.
A second presentation by Tony Flora, from the AFL-CIO and the local United Way Board, will review the 2016 update of the ALICE Report, a project of the Indiana Association of United Ways.
Marty and Tony are both members of the leadership board of the Community Forum for Economic Justice. Two guest community leaders will respond to their presentations and share the ways that their organizations address the economic challenges in St. Joseph County.
Debie Coble is the President and General Manager of Goodwill Industries of Michiana.
LeRoy King III is the Executive Director of St. Joseph County Bridges Out of Poverty Initiative.
As always, we anticipate a lively discussion following the panel presentations!

“Indiana’s economy saw only incremental growth in recent years, making it difficult for many Hoosiers to improve their financial status. The economy showed signs of improvement starting in 2012, yet more than one in three households in Indiana struggles financially, as the cost of living continues to exceed what most wages pay.
In 2014, 36 percent of households in Indiana could not afford basic needs such as housing, child care, food, health care, and transportation. Many of Indiana’s households are living in poverty. An even greater number of Hoosiers are households with incomes above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), but not earning enough to afford basic household necessities. They are A.L.I.C.E. – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.”
