June 20: Community forum Meeting on Raising Wages

Companies Receiving Taxpayer Subsidies from South Bend Should Pay Its Employees at Least the Minimum Wage Paid to City Workers

Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised the pay of City of South Bend employees – all employees, including temporary, seasonal, and part-time workers – to at least $10.10 an hour.   The Community Forum for Economic Justice endorsed this initiative as an important step towards the goal of a living standard sufficient to sustain life in dignity.

In his speech announcing this change, the Mayor called on all employers in South Bend to increase the pay of their workers to at least $10.10 an hour.  At its June 20th meeting, the Community Forum will discuss an important proposal in support of this objective: requiring all companies receiving taxpayer subsidies (tax abatements) from the City of South Bend to pay their workers at least as well as the City pays its workers.
