September meeting of the Community Forum for Economic Development

The September meeting of the Community Forum for Economic
Development
is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 7 –
9 pm
at the office of the Minority Health Coalition, 915 N.
Bendix Drive (in LaSalle Square).  All meetings of the
Community Forum are open to the public.  This month’s meeting is a
business meeting, focusing on projects and activities of the Community
Forum.  Agenda items include:

1) A review and discussion of the structure of the CFED,
addressing the roles of the membership and of the coordinating
committee.  As we get ready for our second Coordinating Committee
election, we plan to look back on our last year and forward to the
future of our organization.  Your input is critical.

2) An update on the LaSalle Square Redevelopment Plan,
which will be presented to the SB Redevelopment Commission on Friday,
September 19.  CFED members have participated on a Steering Committee
with representatives of community institutions, organizations, and
elected officials to give direction and feedback to the professional
team of market analysts, planners, and architects hired by the City to
develop this plan.

3) A discussion of Bill No. 90-08, which was introduced by Councilman
Mark Catanzarite at the September 9 meeting of the St. Joseph County
Council. The proposed ordinance would establish tax abatement
procedures and general standards for the St. Joseph County
Council
.

4) Reports on other Community Forum projects, including a proposal for
a new project on digital inclusion.

Also at the September
meeting:

We will be taking reservations, on September 16, for the St. Joseph
Valley Project’s Jobs and Justice Dinner.  Many members of CFED
attended last year’s banquet.  We had a great time, good food, an
interesting program, and a chance to join with other area activists
working to improve the quality of life in our community.  We’re
looking forward to a similar experience on Tuesday, September
30
, at the 10th Annual Jobs and Justice Dinner.
The guest speaker will be Arlene Holt Baker, Executive Vice President,
AFL-CIO, and the 2008 Award Winners include Paula Johnson, Community
Activist (LaSalle Park Neighborhood Association, CFED, SJVP), Tim
Hacker, Labor Activist (United Auto Workers Local 5) and Oliver Davis,
Faith Activist (South Bend Common Councilman, TRANSPO Board Chairman).
